Kingdom of Goji Berries and Super Food

Goji berries are also known as Wolfberries. Some people even mis-spell it as "gogi berries". It is a sweet-taste, dark-red coloured dried fruit, and mainly comes from north-western area of China. It has been grown and consumed in China for a few thousand years. In the first instance, Chinese medicine believes it acts on liver and kidney channels and enriches yin. So it is a common practice in Chinese medicine to prescribe it to treat liver, kidney, or eye diseases, along with other herbs. On the other hand, Chinese people also consume goji berries in their day-to-day lives, because they believe this red coloured berry can keep them healthy, young, and energetic. This fruit has been eaten as raw, as goji juice, as herbal tea (e.g. with Chrysanthemum), with yogurt, and with cereal etc etc.

Recent years people all over the world have discovered many benefits of goji berry. In July 2006 Time Magazine called the goji berry the "Breakout Superfruit of the Year". Its popularity and consumption have been increasing all the time in Western countries such as USA, Japan, Canada and Europe et. Many published studies discussed the benefits of goji berries, including its antioxidant properties etc. Researchers have found that goji contains many nutrients including 11 essential elements, 22 trace dietary minerals, 18 amino acids, 6 essential vitamins, 8 polysaccharides, and 6 monosaccharidesm.

In addition, it also has been found to contain 5 unsaturated fatty acids (essential fatty acids, linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, beta-sitosterol and other phytosterols), 5 carotenoids (e.g. beta-carotene and zeaxanthin etc), a xanthophy, and many phenolic pigments associated with antioxidant properties. Up to 77% of total carotenoids present in wolfberries exist as zeaxanthin. Polysaccharides are its major constituent, representing up to 31% of pulp weight.

For all of these reasons, it has become a well-known super fruit in the world.

Organic Goji Berries

The commercial growth of Organic Goji Berries is not an easy process. It requires at least 3 years to get the land ready, along with other measures. So far the annual yield of organic goji berries in China is still not significant by comparison with ordinary goji berries, simply because there are not many lands ready for it. Therefore there are quite some differences in terms of pricing.

Tibetan Goji Berries

Goji berries are mostly found in the market as Tibetan or Himalaya goji berries. We are not saying that there is no presence of goji berries in Tiebet or Himaylan region, however, what we are saying is there is no commerical growth of goji berries in Tibet, so majority of goji berries are not coming from Tibet, but from north-western part of China.
